Yityish Aynaw, the first woman of Ethiopian origin to be crowned ‘Miss Israel

The 21-year-old model Yityish Aynaw, a former IDF officer, made aliyah some 10 years ago. Yityish Aynaw, a former Israeli army officer, has become the first Ethiopian-born Israeli to win the Miss Israel pageant.

A panel of judges awarded the title to Aynaw, a 21-year-old model who came to Israel about a decade ago, at the International Convention Center Haifa on Wednesday. “It’s important that a member of the Ethiopian community wins the competition for the first time,” she was quoted by Israeli media as telling the judges in response to a question. “There are many different communities of many different colors in Israel, and it’s important to show that to the world.” Aynaw came to Israel with her family when she was 12. Acclimating to Israel was difficult at first, Aynaw said, but she picked up the language quickly with the help of a friend.

She has been working as a saleswoman at a clothing store since her army discharge.

President Barack Obama strongly condemned officials at the Internal Revenue Service for singling out conservative groups during the lead-up to the 2012 elections.

In a press conference on Monday, Obama called the reports “outrageous” and intolerable, while saying he would reserve harsher judgment for when a fuller report on the IRS’s actions is formally released.

“This is pretty straightforward,” said Obama. “If, in fact, IRS personnel engaged in the kind of practices that have been reported on and were intentionally targeting conservative groups, then that is outrageous, and there is no place for it, and they have to be held fully accountable, because the IRS as an independent agency requires absolute integrity and people have to have confidence that they are applying the laws in a non-partisan way. You should feel that way regardless of party.”

“But I have got no patience with it, I will not tolerate it, and we will make sure that we find out exactly what happened on this,” he added.

The remarks were the president’s first on the evolving scandal surrounding the tax collection agency. News broke last Friday that the IRS had targeted groups with the words “Tea Party” or “Patriot” in their name, forcing them to fill out additional questionnaires and provide more information in order to get approval for their tax-exempt status. Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal reported that the IRS had also given extra scrutiny to organizations that focused on government spending, debt and taxes.

White kids will no longer make up the majority of America’s youth in just five to six years, according to Census Bureau projections released Wednesday.

Those projections, which include four different scenarios for population growth, estimate that today’s minority ethnic groups will soon account for at least half of the under-18 population, either in 2018 or 201. “This is going to start from the bottom of the age distribution and move its way up,” said William Frey, demographer and senior fellow for the Brookings Institution. “All of these projections show we’re moving to greater diversity in the United States.”

Already, more than half of American babies being born belong to racial and ethnic groups traditionally thought of as “minorities” — which means it could soon be time to toss that word out completely.

By the time those kids grow up to become adults — sometime between 2036 and 2042 — everyone in the working-age population (ages 18 to 64) will be a member of a group that comes up short of the 50% line.

Demographers call it a “minority-majority.” No one single racial or ethnic group will make up more than half of the population.

White, non-Hispanic people currently make up about 63% of the entire United States population. Starting in 2041, they’ll account for less than half, according to projections.

Nelson Mandela with his wife, the President of South Africa, and members of the African National Congress. Mr. Mandela was recently hospitalized for a treatable illness.

Although he is still the most beloved leader on the African continent, age is finally playing a role in his activities. Nelson Mandela’s name still inspires millions of people in Africa and around the world but Nelson Mandela the man is over 90 years old, and not in the best of health. In a recent hospital stay he looked confused and irritated, as if his rheumy eyes failed to register the faces of the top leaders of the African National Congress who came to see him last month, even though he had known them for decades.

These images, captured by a government camera crew and broadcast nationwide, were the first to appear in more than nine months of the ailing Mr. Mandela, who has been in the hospital four times in less than a year. Far from being honored, Mr. Mandela’s relatives were furious over the broadcast, saying party leaders had invaded his privacy and exploited his frailty to reap the political benefits of being seen in his hallowed company at least one more time.

“I was really, really livid,” said Makaziwe Mandela, Mr. Mandela’s eldest daughter, arguing that the filming took place against the family’s wishes. “They should have had the sense to not publish those pictures.”

As Mr. Mandela fades away, the struggle to claim his legacy, his image, his moneymaking potential and even the time he has remaining has begun in earnest.

The governing African National Congress, which Mr. Mandela led for decades, is accused of using him as a prop to remind voters of the party’s noble roots at a time when it has come to be seen as a collection of corrupt, self-serving elites. The party’s main rival, the Democratic Alliance, has come under fire, too, for using a photo of him embracing one of its white progenitors, spurring complaints that the opposition is trying to co-opt Mr. Mandela’s image to unseat his own party.

And all the while, his descendants are engaged in a very public fight over Mr. Mandela’s financial legacy. Angry that a trust set up for their welfare and upkeep is partly controlled by someone they consider an outsider, his friend George Bizos, the family has gone to court to remove Mr. Bizos as a director.

The Ecumenical Leadership Council of Missouri formed to unite Missouri’s African American Clergy.

African American denominational leaders representing Missouri’s Black population recently came together to form the Ecumenical Leadership Council of Missouri. The organization’s mission is to present a unified committee of individuals with influence in the African American church population. Although all members are church leaders, they will act as individuals as they seek a more representative share of the state’s economic resources through the political process.

Included in the Ecumenical Leadership Council of Missouri will be Rev. Wallace Hartsfield, leader of the Kansas City region; Bishop Alphonso Scott, leader of theSt. Louis region; and Rev Caroles Taylor, representing the Columbia region. In addition to the regions mentioned, pastors from Popular Bluff, Springfield, and Charleston Missouri will also be included in the Council’s membership. According to Bishop Scott, the mission of the Council is to advocate on behalf of the African American population of Missouri and work towards reducing the inequity that exist between the allocation of federal and local resources that are distributed by officials of the state of Missouri In addition to using their influence across the state, the Council will also take various positions on the different propositions that will appear on Missouri’s election ballots.

During the initial meeting on August 5th, in Columbia Mo, Clarence Jackson, publisher of Blackchurchstlouis.org was selected to become the organization’s Facilitator. He will be responsible for coordinating the schedules, agenda, and marketing efforts of the Council. For more information on the Ecumenical Leadership Council of Missouri, interested parties are encouraged to call 314-721-2288
